A New Perspective for the New Year
2020 was an incredible year. That may be an interesting way to describe the year since it typically carries a positive connotation but, it truly has been an unbelievable year. There have been endless circumstances that simply were out of our control. When the pandemic hit, we suddenly had to shift our daily routines and make extraordinary changes to our lives. Many of us lost our jobs and some lost loved ones. Social gatherings and events were canceled, communities fell apart, and the only time we felt safe was in our own solitude.
We have survived through a lot this year. It’s no surprise we anxiously awaited the New Year with hopes of a fresh start but, the truth is our lives will never be the same. Every year, we make resolutions with the intention of leaving negativity behind us in order to embrace a new and vibrant life; but, this year, we should start anew with a different perspective.
Instead of tossing away the past and the baggage that came along with it, we should embrace it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with letting go of the past. In fact, this philosophy is celebrated on many different platforms. However, 2020 has challenged us mentally, physically, and spiritually. It has shown us that we are survivors, that we are resilient, and that we will always persevere and adapt. Last year has forced us to work harder than ever before to just simply survive; and we have all grown exponentially from this experience.
Being able to bring in the New Year with this life experience is a cause for celebration. Of course, we should absolutely let go of all that no longer serves us but, let’s not forget the strength and tenacity that’s been cultivated to bring us to this moment. We have pulled together and shown more love and support throughout the year than ever before. We have collectively experienced a trauma causing us to deeply connect with and understand each other.
So, again, 2020 has been an incredible year. It has single handedly prepared you for any obstacle that may come your way. Allow this love, empathy, and determination to carry you as you transition into this New Year. Honor your experience and all that you have endured. Celebrate it and remember these words by Craig D. Lounsbrough: “Any new beginning is forged from the shards of the past, not from the abandonment of the past.”
Happy New Year
